How we bring a green pool back
- Find the cause. Algae, a struggling filter, a pump that isn’t running long enough, a tired salt cell or water that’s out of balance. Fixing the cause is what stops it coming back.
- Shock and floc. A strong sanitiser dose kills the algae, and in bad cases a flocculant drops the dead algae and fine particles to the floor for removal.
- Brush, skim and vacuum. Walls, floor and every corner, repeated over the following visits.
- Clean the filter. Backwash or clean the filter so it can keep up while the water clears.
- Test and balance. Once it’s clear we set pH, chlorine and alkalinity so it stays that way.
How long does it take?
We can normally have a pool back to normal in two to three days, and most recoveries take up to three visits depending on how far gone the pool is. Badly neglected pools or ones with equipment faults can take longer, and we’ll tell you upfront.
Why pools go green in the Highlands
The classic Southern Highlands green pool is the one that was “put to sleep” for winter. Leaves pile up on the floor, the pump runs less, the chlorinator struggles in cold water, and come the first warm spring days the pool turns. Heavy summer storms and big rain events, especially around Robertson and the escarpment, can also throw the balance out fast. A regular service through the cooler months is usually cheaper than a spring rescue.

Frequently asked questions
Can my green pool be saved, or does it need draining?
Most green pools can be cleared without draining. Draining a pool can damage it and wastes a lot of water, so it’s a last resort. We’ll tell you honestly if your pool is the exception.
Why do I need more than one visit?
Killing the algae is quick; removing it and getting the water crystal clear takes a few rounds of vacuuming, filter cleaning and balancing. That’s why most recoveries take up to three visits.
How do I stop it going green again?
Run the pump long enough, keep the baskets and filter clean, keep sanitiser levels up and get the water tested regularly. A regular service plan takes care of all of that.
