Leaf litter: keeping Highlands pools clear in autumn

Practical tips for handling autumn leaf drop and gum leaves in Southern Highlands pools: baskets, covers, vacuuming and protecting your equipment.

The Highlands’ oaks, elms, maples and liquidambars are beautiful in autumn, and they end up in a lot of pools. On bush blocks, eucalypts drop leaves and bark all year. Either way, leaves are the biggest single job for many local pool owners.

Why leaves matter

Leaves that sit on the floor break down, stain the surface, use up chlorine and feed algae. When they block skimmer and pump baskets, water flow drops and the filter and chlorinator can’t do their job.

Empty baskets often

In peak leaf season, check skimmer and pump baskets every few days. A full pump basket can starve the pump of water and damage it. More on pool pumps.

Get leaves out before they sink

Skim the surface regularly. Once leaves sink, vacuum them out rather than leaving them to break down. A leaf vacuum that collects debris in its own bag, like The Bottom Feeder, keeps leaves out of your filter entirely.

Use a leaf cover

Through autumn, a leaf cover catches most of the drop before it hits the water.
